CLASSROOM PROCEDURES
BEGINNING OF CLASS
- Enter the room politely; put away your supplies or materials.
- Turn in Your Homework: Make sure your name is on your paper; place your paper upside down in the "homework" basket.
- If you did not do your homework, get a “Homework Excuse Note”, fill it out at your desk and return it to the “homework” basket.
- Begin bell work immediately
- you may sharpen your pencil if no one else is using the sharpener.
ENDING OF CLASS:
Tidy up your area, check for dropped pencils, and wait for dismissal from me. I dismiss the class, not the bell. As you leave, push in your chairs and quietly leave.
PARTICIPATING IN GROUP LESSONS:
Do not bring anything with you unless I ask you to; politely find a place to sit where you can do your best learning; sit flat, not on your knees and do not lean back in your chair; listen carefully for new information; raise your hand to speak; do not speak when someone else is speaking.
OBTAINING HELP WITH ASSIGNMENTS:
Raise your hand to get help from me; if you are working with a group, ask them for help in understanding how you do the assignment.
WHEN TO USE THE PENCIL SHARPENER:
You may sharpen your pencil at the beginning of class; only one person may be at the pencil sharpener at a time; if your pencil breaks during the lesson, use a community pencil; you may not sharpen your pencil during instructional time.
USING THE CLASSROOM LIBRARY:
When I am not teaching the whole group and you have finished your assignment, you may check out a book. To do so, select a book (you only have three minutes at the class library) and sign out the book on the sign-out sheet. Take good care of the book; when you are finished, return the book to the basket and check it off the list.
PAPER HEADING:
As soon as you get a paper, print your first name and last initial at the top on the right-hand side and today's date at the top on the left-hand side.
THROWING AWAY TRASH:
You may throw away trash whenever you need to if I am not teaching the whole group; do not play basketball with your trash; make sure all trash lands in the can;
PLEDGE:
(First Period Only) When you hear/see the signal, stop what you're doing immediately and stand up; place your right hand over your heart; say the Pledge of Allegiance respectfully;
VISITORS IN THE CLASSROOM:
When visitors enter the room, continue to work on your assignment. Remember, most visitors are here to watch you learn, so be ready to explain what you are working on; treat visitors respectfully. If a visitor (teacher, principal, etc.) needs to speak with Mr. Simon, continue working, sit quietly, and remain in your seat.
FIRE DRILL:
Stop everything; stand up and head for the back door quickly, but without running or pushing; do not cover your ears; do not make any side trips; the first person in line holds the classroom door for the rest of the class; stay in line; continue to the back of the playground; wait patiently, calmly, and quietly in line outside until we are allowed to go back to what we were doing.
TORNADO DRILL:
Line-up at the front door; Listen for the teacher’s instructions; Be quiet and listen.
SIGNALS FOR ATTENTION:
When I need your attention, I will flick the lights off/on or either count down from 5-4-3-2-1; as soon as you hear the signal, stop what you are doing, look at me, and listen for directions.
HELPING OTHER STUDENTS:
In a cooperative classroom, it is good to help one another; if someone needs help with directions or reading an assignment, help him or her if you are able; if someone needs help with understanding the problem, tell him or her to ask me for help; never put down another student who asks for help.
FINISHING WORK EARLY:
If you finish an assignment, study for the upcoming test; work on your vocabulary; make up missing assignments; work on your homework; read a book, write a story, make up math problems, peer-tutor someone who needs your help, or practice math/reading on the computer (if time permits).
WHERE CAN I FIND ASSIGNMENTS WHEN I COME BACK FROM AN ABSENCE?
You will find your assignment in the “Absent Folder”. Take only the assignments with your name on it. There is one packet for each day absent.
PARTICIPATING IN CLASS DISCUSSIONS:
Raise your hand; Wait to be called on; If you don’t get called on, wait quietly for your turn; When it is your turn, speak loudly, clearly, and discuss seriously.
WHEN A CLASSROOM OR SCHOOL-WIDE ANNOUNCEMENT IS MADE:
Listen to the announcement, and then continue working quietly.
