Parents, Teachers, and Students; my name is Kyree Simon. I am a graduate of Claflin University with a Bachelors of Arts in Mass Communications. I recently join the program called Teach for America. Teach for America works in partnership with communities to expand educational opportunity for children facing the challenges of poverty. Founded in 1990, Teach for America recruits and develops a diverse corps of outstanding individuals of all academic disciplines to commit two years to teach in high-need schools and become lifelong leaders in the movement to end educational inequity. After finishing the program I am a certified English teacher.
I grew up in a community that valued my culture and heritage, and I would like to live and work in a community that does the same. I have always had a desire to teach children; it is my greatest passion. In addition to teaching, I enjoy traveling, exploring the web, and spending time with love ones.
I’m going to try and make my classroom as comfortable as I can for my students. This will be a place to have fun, but most importantly a place you will learn. I think it is important for students to see me as a referent authority. I consider myself a personable person and I value getting to know students personally. I do not feel that students need to see me as an authority figure just because I am their teacher, but because they feel that I have earned that authority by building relationships with them. I also feel that it is important to give students encouragement and praise in order to build this referent authority status. I can see myself being somewhat of a reward authority. I do not feel that rewards such as prizes work as well as acknowledgment and encouragement, so I see myself being more of a referent authority than a reward authority.
One of the best ways to reach out to the teachers and parents is by inviting them to be a part of the classroom. Parents and faculty members will be welcomed into the classroom all throughout the school year. They can help with reading, mentoring, and can volunteer for school-wide activities. Parents and faculty members will also be brought into the classroom to share their stories for lessons and educational information. Field trips will be another way for parents to get involved in the school. Parent volunteers are often needed as chaperons for field trips and can be of great help. Field trips to places in the community, such as libraries, restaurants, and museums are also great ways of reaching out to the resources the community has to offer. I will work with the guidance counselor in the school in order to find ways to get parents and other faculty members involved in the school and in the classroom.
I’m looking forward to a good year and I hope that not only my students gain knowledge, but also my fellow co-workers and parents!
